The State Bar of California e-briefs

DISCIPLINE HEARINGS --- Comments about attorney admissions and disciplinary proceedings and competence will be heard on Dec. 9 in Los Angeles and Dec. 11 in San Francisco.

2009 DUES --- The State Bar’s annual fee statement will be mailed Dec. 1 to all active attorneys and all inactive lawyers under the age of 70. Dues must be paid by Feb. 2.

PRO BONO PRACTICE PROGRAM --- The Emeritus Attorney Program has been re-named and expanded to allow lawyers to go active solely for pro bono work.

FIND YOUR SPOT --- The State Bar is recruiting applicants for nearly 200 positions on more than three dozen committees, boards and commissions.

57 WINNERS --- The California Bar Foundation has awarded 57 law students with public interest or diversity scholarships totaling more than a quarter million dollars.

NEW AFFINITY PARTNERS --- A new group of affinity partners who provide tools and services to assist attorneys with marketing their practices have joined CalBar Connect, the State Bar's members-only Web site.

BOALT HALL CONFERENCE --- A forum for judges, government officials, scholars and practitioners will address the work of the state Supreme Court and legal issues affecting California’s judiciary on Nov. 14 at the University of California, Berkeley. MCLE credit is available.

BANK STABILITY CONCERNS --- The State Bar's Ethics Hotline offers lawyers research assistance on professional responsibility issues related to client trust accounts and the nation's current financial crisis.

FORECLOSURE CLEARINGHOUSE ---The Public Interest Clearinghouse has created a Web site to provide information about the mortgage foreclosure crisis as well as opportunities for attorneys to volunteer their help.

FEE ARB TRAINING --- The Kern County Bar Association and the State Bar are offering a fee arbitration training session on Oct. 15, in Bakersfield.

NEW STATE BAR COURT JUDGE --- Judge Catherine D. Purcell of the Superior Court of Kern County was appointed to the Review Department of State Bar Court by the Supreme Court.

BOG ELIGIBILITY --- Thousand Oaks attorney Michael Tenenbaum survived a challenge to his eligibility to represent State Bar District 6.

CALBAR CONNECT --- A new members-only Web site, CalBar Connect, links attorneys to affinity partners who offer discounts and programs to help them save money in their practices.

GOING GREEN --- The State Bar is promoting “green” practices in law firms through a set of voluntary standards aimed at preserving and improving the environment.
